A Senior Family Weekend I'll Never Forget!

By Scott Watson with Jim Bartell

Early in December 2004, I had a weekend jaunt I'll long remember. You might say Christmas came early for me that year, especially in my heart.

It had all begun a few weeks before when I was talking with an old friend of mine named Waldo. Well, our friendship doesn't go all that far back, but he was born in 1915 so that does put him a few years ahead of me since I arrived on the scene in 1954.

Waldo's family lives up in Kelso, Washington (Seattle area) and he related to me that with his age and difficulty of traveling alone at 89 years old, that it had been well over two years since he'd shared a visit with his sister and brothers. So, I said, "Why don't we go and see them. I've got some business I can do up there and you can have a reunion with your family."

He said, "You'd do that for me?"

"You bet," I said. On Friday morning, Dec. 10 we boarded the airplane.

Getting Waldo to western Washington for this reunion was a much less daunting task than would have been bringing the rest of his family to Fremont for a celebration. Waldo's family includes an older brother at 91, a younger brother at 87 and then there is baby sister Irene at a mere 77. I dropped Waldo off at Irene's home and then went off to do a bit of personal business after making plans for a Sunday return.

Sunday afternoon provided moments of family fellowship I'll never forget.

Waldo's family met at Irene's home for this special "Thanks-Mas" holiday celebration (half way between Christmas and Thanksgiving). The food was marvelous. Baby sister Irene certainly can cook! She made turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and a fabulous pumpkin pie for desert.

Seeing them all together, enjoying their conversations, watching them share in each other's company...well let's just say that it was wonderful for me to be there.

You may have guessed by now that I did enjoy some personal satisfaction from being there. In fact, I sort of wondered if Kris Kringle ever felt so as a result of helping to make such weekend happen!

A final emotional realization came for me when I found myself missing my own parents a little less as a result of being with Waldo and his family. Yes, there were indeed benefits shared by all.

I'd like to thank Waldo for providing me with some special insights into senior thoughts, personal needs and family life.
